Fairmined Gold
The Start of Designing Ethical Jewelry
Lia Terni began her journey into ethical jewelry design in Madrid in 2011, inspired by architecture and art. Her creations are organic, weightless, and light, each handmade with dedication and passion. After many hours of intricate craftsmanship, her designs stand as unique, detailed works of art. In 2011, Lia became the first designer in Spain to work with ECO GOLD, marking a significant milestone in her commitment to sustainability.
"I'm excited to work with ECO GOLD. I believe small actions can lead to big changes. Responsible mining helps protect our environment and supports artisan miners," says Lia Terni.
She highlights the often-overlooked human and environmental toll of traditional gold mining. "Many people don't realize that gold extraction devastates nature and humanity. My goal is to contribute to change and help consumers become more conscious. Artisan and small-scale mining are present in over 55 countries, mainly in Africa, Asia, and South America. Around 100 million people depend on this work, often under subhuman conditions in a cycle of exploitation. Many operate outside legal systems, unregistered and unprotected."
Artisan miners account for 20% of the world's gold production, yet they make up 90% of the workforce. Their industry is fraught with issues such as insecurity, child labor, and violence toward women. The skyrocketing price of gold—from €195 per ounce in 2001 to over €1,500 per ounce—has further exacerbated the challenges, driving an exodus to mining areas and intensifying environmental destruction through deforestation, mercury and cyanide use, and river contamination.
ECO GOLD offers a responsible alternative. Extracted under strict guidelines, these mines respect the environment, uphold women's rights, and prohibit child labor. Miners receive 15% above market value, which is reinvested into social projects that benefit their communities.
Understanding the importance of sustainable practices in the jewelry industry, Lia creates her delicate pieces using ECO GOLD from the Chocó region of Colombia. This gold is extracted without mercury or cyanide, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint.
"Conscious consumerism, making a difference, and redefining luxury as sustainable are my goals when using ECO GOLD," says Lia. Each piece she creates carries a message of responsibility and a commitment to a brighter future for people and the planet.
